More WordPress 2.7 Changes

Just updated through SVN again to latest development version availble, and there are two new changes to the dashboard inside WordPress’s admin panel. As stated in the screenshot above, you can see there are two container, one for inbox (which usage and purpose is still ye to be announced) and another one for Quick Post, where you can write the post just from the dashboard page instead of going to the write page. Although I have no comment for Inbox container, I think the Quick Post is pretty useless, at least for me.

WordPress’s Inbox, what will it be?

With the new function called Inbox appearing in WordPress 2.7 Hemorrhage, there are speculations about what it is gonna be and how will it serves the bloggers. Nothing is confirmed yet as there is still two more months until 2.7 is released to public and WP team can still remove it.

Lots of guess regarding the Inbox function. Some thinks it is something to do with threaded comment which WP has promised to add in the upcoming version. Yet I don’t think it has to do with comment but instead it will be a totally new feature that most of us do not expect WP to release in 2.7.

Maybe, it has to do with the BuddyPress which aim is to bring social networking to WordPress. It may become WP answer to new version of MovableType (Pro) which includes tools to transform blog into fully functional social networking site.

Whatever it is, I am quite pleased with the UI changes to the admin as well as posting page, and cannot wait to see WP bringing us new features in 2.7.

Recently, after updating my WordPress blog via SVN, I have seen changes and new features inside the admin panel (some usable and a few still prototype). WordPress 2.7 Bleeding Edge has been changed to Hemorrhage (which is a hit song by Fuel, a rock band). All the WordPress codenames used to be Jazz related except for this one.

iToday?

Posted on August 25th, 2008 | Under iPhone | No Comments »

iToday is an iPhone/iPod Touch application coming out from Today (Singapore’s 2nd most-read English newspaper). The purpose of it: to let people read Today Newspaper on iPhone or iPod Touch. An app just for reading a single newspaper? I thought RSS is what we use for syndicating news content?

For me, it is yet another “CAN DO” application that we will see on AppStore. Today boasts the features of iToday, like offline reading ability and archives which is also possible with many of the RSS reader applications available on AppStore.

Instead of developing a native app, what Today can just do is to add iPhone support to its existing news website. And of course, for offline reading and etc, just enable full content RSS feed instead of going through all the troubles. With iPhone 3G recent release in Singapore and with this iToday app, I forsee a lots of follow-up applications which purposes are to showcase the attitude of “I CAN ALSO DO” instead of really serving the needs of users.

iPhone has come to Singapore, so what?

Posted on August 23rd, 2008 | Under iPhone | No Comments »

Yesterday night, iPhone was officially released in Singapore by SingTel and Apple. I am not sure whether there are people sleeping and queuing to get it. iPhone comes with brand new SingTel mobile phone plans called iFlexi plans and the main thing is you can’t just go and grab it as you wish instead you have to make an appointment with SingTel to go and collect your iPhone which price start from S$348 (approx US$246 and tied to 2 years contact).

As an early adapter of first generation iPhone (4GB), I am very aware how revolutionary iPhone is and how it can change the way we do with our mobile phones. Yet with more and more applications and services release for iPhone, more and more I realize that iPhone does not work that well outside of US and Europe.

Just take a look at the app stores and all the iphone enabled websites, they are either US or Europe based. Although new generation of iPhone comes with 3G, promised connection speed of 3.6Mbps by SingTel is quite impossible unless local developers start to come out with applications as well as web based services for iPhone, and of course they must be hosted locally.

If not, it is very hard to utilize apps like Qik which offers live video broadcasting. I have tried using it on WiFi and it still has a bit of lag so you can think of how app will perform on 3G.

Yet, if you are a social networking whore, iPhone is a must have device for you to connect 24/7 to your Facebook or MySpace or even your blogs.
